A quick programming note: This issue is a solo affair, as Dame Karen is on vacation. Both of Your Dames are taking the last two weeks of summer off, so we’ll see you on September 9!
After a brutally sweltering month, I’m now waking up to a blessed slight coolness each morning, as if September is sending me a wee note from the future to say that honey cake-baking season is approaching, and also reminding me to relish the heat and later sunsets while I can. That’s right, it’s my personal most wonderful time of the year: sun-dappled melancholia! A whisper of anticipatory saudade! A little time to reflect and reminisce, and relish the best of the gentle downslope towards the oncoming days where I’ll need to both hustle and bustle.
Here’s a little round-up of things that give me that end-of-summer feeling. I’d love to know more about yours! And of course, as Southern Hemisphere Dames cruise towards your lovely springtimes, please tell us all about your traditions! The comments are, as ever, open.
I always have to have a soundtrack for this period, and my go-to since–ulp!—2015 is my Steamy & Sentimental playlist. I’ve been adding songs to it for years, and am in the middle of freshening it up a bit, but will never ever change the last song. It’s gotta be “Boys of Summer”, ideally played while driving, windows down, juuuust as the evening draws in.
It’s not all Very Deep Feelings over here. Even though September doesn’t really herald THE start of a new TV season anymore, there are a whole bunch of new and returning shows I’m keeping an eye on. In the olden times, my husband & I would pore over the TV Preview issue of Entertainment Weekly, of blessed memory, to choose which new shows we wanted to try out. Now I consult Metacritic’s regularly updated master list of upcoming premiere dates, which isn’t as fun as turning the pages of a magazine, but does have the advantage of linking directly to trailers. I’m especially looking forward to the returns of Abbott Elementary and Los Espookys, and the debuts of Wedding Season, Magpie Murders, and maybe High School, based on Tegan and Sara’s memoir of the same name.
Tell us all about your Autumnal (or Vernal) Things To Look Forward To! When we come back, it’ll nearly be time for this annual gloriousness!
