Mirror Ball Tears & Sequin Dreams, Pt. 3: Dame Margaret
Dame Margaret’s Light Dusting of Links
See, thank god Catherine Zate-Jones exists, for how else could Julia Roberts ever plausibly have portrayed someone “plain”
Despite the persistent belief of Us Magazine, the very last thing I want from celebrities is for them to be “just like us.” NO. I demand that my celebrities be extravagantly, baroquely, glamorously, aspirationally weird. WHICH is why I found myself so delighted by Catherine Zeta-Jones’s contribution this week to The Strategists’ “What I Can’t Live Without” column. No boring dietary supplements and unconvincing plugs for the drugstore makeup she’s paid to represent here! Just weird, privileged, insanely compelling but utterly tone-deaf nonsense. To wit:
But also, I do need this mosquito-repelling cotton wrap Catherine recommends in absolutely every color in which it’s sold. Aspirational batshittery. The perfect celebrity behavior!!
Self-insight in normals, though, can be extremely charming. For example: Kristen Arnett’s contribution to Vox’s long-running column “The Best Money I Ever Spent,” which is— improbably— about a $14 plastic kiddie pool and genuinely moving. Long-running columns are all about what YOU bring to the table!
Speaking of bringing things to the table, please allow me to continue my informal quarantine series about the great things my great roommate cooks and feeds me. THIS WEEK: Melissa Clark’s farro salad with leeks, chickpeas, and currants which does not sound special but tastes truly amazing and made the entire house smell like heaven. And, genuinely, looking at the steps I feel like even I would be capable of executing it well. A miracle recipe.
