It’s Not Bragging If You’ve Actually Done It
aka wisdom we need to remind ourselves of at least twice annually
The popular construct of the annual calendar is telling us that we're just a few weeks past the midway point of 2022. As time is famously fake, we are setting aside this obvious attempt at a scam (to what end said scam has been devised, we cannot say, but it has the unmistakable whiff of nonsense about it), and are very keen to mark the occasion with a celebration!
First, a little housekeeping. The winner of the Two Bossy Dames Tweet-A-Long movie livetweet is Esteemed Reader Lisa, who has selected the delightful heist romp Logan Lucky, currently streaming on Hulu. Join us on Twitter on July 31st, 8:00 PM ET/7:00 PM CT — see you there!
We’re throwing a little party for you, dear Dames Nation, inviting you to share with the class any and all things you’ve worked on since January 1 that you’re particularly proud of in this Thread of Fully Justified Braggadocious-ness! (N.B.: to keep the conversation streamlined, we’ve disabled comments on this post.)
Please, think about your own excellence as broadly as you’d like. Any aspect of your lives — personal, professional, in-between, or entirely other — that you’re feeling good about, we’d love to know about and celebrate. (And of course, if you’d rather not share publicly but want to tell us about it privately, just hit reply.)
And because we too often forget the good stuff we’ve done, here’s our own round-up of Stuff We Think We Did Well So Far:
Ronnie Spector’s death in January gave us a reason to revisit her catalog and life. Our shared love for Ronnie and her work is a foundational element of our friendship, which makes it feel oddly like a gift to get to collaborate on this remembrance. Because we think a lot about music, we had a lot of fun thinking critically about FX’s Sex Pistols miniseries and putting together some maximalist liner notes to Hulu’s Pam & Tommy miniseries (a briefer version found a loving home at Vulture).
Our call to one and all to revisit the general excellence of Method Man and his wide-ranging career in For Your Consideration remains as urgent today as when we hit publish way back in February.
Drugstore Cowgirl has been a hoot and a half and an excuse to revisit or buy all sorts of cheap perfume options in the name of Karen’s own extremely specific and informal version of service journalism. DC is normally a perk for TBD’s paying subscribers, but she’s unlocking one of her favs for this issue in which some friends sit around a dining room table and compare Designer Imposters versions of two iconic Calvin Klein scents to the actual scents themselves: “U” Versus “One”
Dames Nation is the best and your generosity, brilliance, and thoughtfulness have allowed us to collaborate with you on several occasions, and WE THANK YOU! Speaking of service journalism, there’s the Little Upgrades issue which came to be after we asked everyone to chime in on an open thread about the thingamabobs and doo-hickeys that make life just a little better. Then there was the Dreams After 40 issue in which the two of us found ourselves starting whole new Situations as we eased (?!) into our mid-40s and wanted to talk about it with you all and you obliged and there we had our multipart series, Never Keep Your Visions To Yourself and Teamwork: Making The Dream Work. Finally, we all banded together and raised literally thousands of dollars (two! two thousands!) for abortion funds in the wake of the Supreme Court being its usual dickbag self! We love you and we appreciate you and we THANK YOU, always.
Please do join us over at our celebratory thread! And! Always remember to carry yourself through the world with this attitude:
