Gene Hackman is just one of those lovable people. I am so sorry it ended the way it did, but as you twobossydames say, we all need a reminder to keep up with connections that matter.
I, too, wanted to watch a Hackman film last week, and I opted for The Birdcage. Yes, there were remarkably too many horrible parallels to modern life to truly enjoy the movie with 100% gusto, but I did have lots of LOL moments ( Hackman giving an impromptu press conference on a ladder outside his home, the cultural attaché being referred to as a kind of ambassador, Nathan Lane performing a dreamy number with an unimpressed, gum-chewing twink, Nathan Lane walking like a very drunk John Wayne, straightening up (pun intended) Robin Williams’s & Lane’s home, and really anything Hank Azaria). I did like the message of normalizing all kinds of families, and it was shocking to see how much a palimony agreement meant in a time before same-sex marriage. Hackman made a nice-looking woman, too!
So many good lines:
“How do you think I feel? Betrayed, bewildered - wrong response?”
“Meet me in 20 minutes at the corner of El Dorado and Palm.” “Lady, not for a million dollars.”
“Whatever I am, he made me! I was adorable once, young and full of hope. And now look at me! I'm this short, fat, insecure, middle-aged THING!” “I made you short?”

Thank you for inspiring me to re-watch these films!

One review of BIRDCAGE thought the asshole son should have got some comeuppance and I agree.
RIP Mr. Hackman
